THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP. (English version)
By: Ergio Guitian A.
Known as the "fifth major" of the professional golf tour of the United States of America, the players championship is played since 1974. Originally played in Atlanta until 1977 and between 1978 and 1981 in Pontevedra Beach, Florida. Since 1982 this important championship is played in the tpc sawgrass, very close to st augustine florida. As of 2007, the players championship is played in the month of May, specifically the weekend of Mother's Day, one month after the tournament of golf masters and one month before the US Open.
The only player to have won the championship three times is Jack Nicklaus (1974, 1976, and 1978). While Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, and Tiger Woods have won it twice. The lowest score to win the championship was made by Greg Norman in 1994 with 264 shots (-24), while the highest was 289 (+1) by Jack Nicklaus in 1978, the first year in which it was played in Pontevedra Beach.
Designed by Pete Dye, initially it was labeled as an unplayable course, however, with the passage of time it has become the place where everyone wants to play. Its flagship hole, the 17th of the stadium course, is a short par 3 of 140 yards with an island green, but beware, it is one of the holes where most balls played by the best professional golfers in the world end up in the water.
The golf course is known as the stadium course because it was designed and built leaving elevations that serve as natural stands, from where the viewer can see several sites of the course without having to move from one side to another. The tpc sawgrass is a public golf course that can be played all year round, except for the week of the players championship and the previous 2 weeks, when the course is closed to the public.
The best way to play in that course is to stay at the hotel that has the complex inside. Attending the "fifth major" as a spectator is also easy, although it is difficult to stay on site unless you make a reservation well in advance, however, there are many lodging options in st augustine florida, Pontevedra, and Jacksonville, from where you can also plan a visit to the Hall of Fame golf.
