THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP. (English version)

Known as the "fifth major" of the professional golf tour of the United States of America, the players championship is played since 1974. Originally played in Atlanta until 1977 and between 1978 and 1981 in Pontevedra Beach, Florida. Since 1982 this important championship is played in the tpc sawgrass, very close to st augustine florida. As of 2007, the players championship is played in the month of May, specifically the weekend of Mother's Day, one month after the tournament of golf masters and one month before the US Open.

The only player to have won the championship three times is Jack Nicklaus (1974, 1976, and 1978). While Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, and Tiger Woods have won it twice. The lowest score to win the championship was made by Greg Norman in 1994 with 264 shots (-24), while the highest was 289 (+1) by Jack Nicklaus in 1978, the first year in which it was played in Pontevedra Beach.

Designed by Pete Dye, initially it was labeled as an unplayable course, however, with the passage of time it has become the place where everyone wants to play. Our experience.

Our stateroom located on the 6th deck, to port, had a large window to the sea and was equipped with a double bed, a small desk and an executive cooler, as well as a very small bathroom.

After changing our clothes, we go to the aft deck where the pool is and enjoy some cold drinks, very necessary with the heat and humidity characteristic of the Florida summer. At six o'clock in the evening, with English punctuality, sail our ship. There, we stayed until after eight o'clock to watch the sunset, an amazing view.

At nine and a half, in the evening, we had a reservation at the formal restaurant, so we had to hurry to take a shower, get dressed, and arrive at dinner time. The atmosphere was really cozy, we had our reserved table, for two people, next to a window facing port, while with a piano music in the background, we tasted our food.

When we left the restaurant, we went to the aft deck and after a short time they informed us through the internal audio that the casino would open at twelve o'clock, when the boat would reach international waters. We spent some time there to see other passengers playing and after we went to the disco to dance. At half past two, we retired to the stateroom to rest.

The next day we woke up around seven thirty in the morning. When I looked out of the window, I could see the Grand Bahama island. We went down to breakfast and at about ten we disembarked, since at that time it was the departure of the excursion we had chosen, destined for a resort in freeport bahamas. There we spent the day relaxing at the beach and on the edge of a pool that looked like an extension of the sea, surrounded by a garden with very typical tropical landscape. About three o'clock in the afternoon we had a delicious fried fish and afterwards we went for a walk along a flea market, adjacent to the resort, where we bought some souvenirs of the trip, and at five o'clock we boarded the motorcoach that would take us back to the ship.

After boarding the ship, we went directly to the aft deck, where to the beat of the music of a steel band group, the ship sailed at 7 pm. There we enjoyed another amazing sunset, this time from the bow. Later we went to dinner, at the Italian restaurant and end the night again in the giant two-story disco.

On Sunday, after breakfast, we spend the rest of the day on the aft deck and the pool, enjoying the navigation and the amazing views on the sea. At 6 o'clock in the evening our cruise ship docked at the port of Palm Beach, putting an end to our relaxed experience.

Nuestra experiencia.

A la una de la tarde del viernes llegamos al puerto de Palm Beach, después de registrarnos, entregar el equipaje, recibir las llaves del camarote y hacer migración, subimos al barco. Ingresamos por babor (lado izquierdo del barco) a un gigantesco lobby ubicado en el piso 4, donde nos informaron la ubicación de nuestro camarote y de las actividades en general durante el viaje. En el mismo piso del lobby, están el casino, el restaurante formal y dos discotecas, una para mayores de edad, de dos pisos, y otra para "teenagers", donde teníamos prohibida la entrada los adultos, algo que me causo mucha gracia.

En el piso de abajo, hacia estribor (lado derecho del barco) hay un café con grandes ventanales y vista al mar, otros dos restaurantes casuales, uno italiano y otro tipo buffet de comida internacional, además de varias tiendas "duty free.” Nuestro camarote ubicado en el 6to piso, hacia babor, tenía un gran ventanal hacia el mar y estaba equipado con una cama matrimonial, un pequeño escritorio y una neverita ejecutiva, así como un baño muy pequeño.

Después de cambiarnos, nos dirigimos a la cubierta de popa (parte de atrás del barco) donde está la piscina y ahí disfrutar de unas frías espumosas refrescantes, muy necesarias con el calor y humedad característico en el verano de la Florida. A las seis de la tarde, con puntualidad inglesa, zarpo nuestro barco. Ahí nos quedamos hasta después de las ocho para observar la puesta del sol, un espectáculo inigualable.

A las nueve y treinta de la noche teníamos reservación en el restaurante formal, así que tuvimos que apurarnos para bañarnos, vestirnos y llegar en hora para cenar. El ambiente era realmente acogedor, teníamos nuestra mesa reservada, para dos personas, junto a una ventana que daba hacia babor, mientras con una música de piano de fondo, degustamos nuestra comida.

Al salir del restaurante, nos dirigimos a cubierta y al poco rato nos informan a través del audio interno que el casino abriría a las doce, hora en que el barco llegaría a aguas internacionales. Pasamos un rato por allí para ver a otros pasajeros jugando y al poco tiempo nos dirigimos a la discoteca para "echar un pie" (bailar).  A las dos y media, nos retiramos hacia el camarote para descansar.

Al siguiente día nos despertamos como a las siete y media de la mañana. Al asomarme por la ventana ya se veía la isla Gran Bahama, bajamos a desayunar y como a las diez desembarcamos, ya que a esa hora era la salida de la excursión que habíamos escogido, con destino a un resort en freeport bahamas. Allí pasamos el día relajados a la orilla de la playa y al borde de una piscina que parecía una prolongación del mar, rodeados por un jardín muy propio del paisaje tropical. Como a la tres de la tarde almorzamos un delicioso pescado frito y después nos dedicamos a pasear por una especie de "mercado de las pulgas" adyacente al resort donde compramos algunos recuerdos del viaje, para ya a las cinco abordar el autobús que nos llevaría de vuelta al barco.

Después de subir a la embarcación, nos dirigimos directamente a la cubierta, donde al compás de la música de un grupo de "steel band", el barco zarpo a las 7 pm, donde nuevamente disfrutamos de otra alucinante puesta del sol, esta vez desde la proa, para más tarde ir a cenar, en el restaurante italiano y terminar la noche de nuevo en la gigantesca discoteca de dos pisos.

El domingo, después de desayunar, pasamos el resto del día en cubierta, en la piscina, disfrutando del día de navegación y las extraordinarias vistas en altamar. A las 6 de la tarde nuestro barco atraco en el puerto de Palm Beach, poniendo punto final a nuestra relajada experiencia.

Para una gran mayoría de golfistas son conocidas las canchas de Bay Hill, un club privado donde se juega el arnold palmer invitational del PGA Tour en el mes de marzo desde hace más de treinta años. Hasta Ben Hogan y Gene Sarazen jugaron esta corta cancha de 9 hoyos, totalmente plana, la cual puedes jugar caminando. Otra cancha cercana a los 100 años es Dubsdread, localizada en el downtown, excelente cancha de 18 hoyos, también corta, con un espectacular diseño y una buena zona de práctica. También en Winter Park esta Winter Pines, otra corta cancha de 18 hoyos la cual también puedes jugar caminando a ciertas horas. Es una buena opción si quieres practicar los tiros medios y largos.

Hacia los lados de Apopka, hay tres muy buenas canchas de 18 hoyos; Forest City, Wekiva y Zelwood. Tomando hacia el norte, vía Mont Dora, están Black Bear y Red Tail, dos excelentes canchas de 18 hoyos, tipo links, con fairways ondulados y angostos y greens grandes con mucho movimiento. Jugar estas canchas desde los tees de campeonato es todo un reto.

Finalmente, en Lake Mary, al Norte de Orlando, por la I-4, está la joya de las canchas de esa zona, Timacuan Golf Club, nombre indígena de una tribu de Seminoles que habitaron esa zona hasta hace no mucho tiempo. Es una cancha de 18 hoyos y más de 7000 yardas desde los tee de campeonato, aunque se puede jugar mucho más corta ya que tiene cinco juegos de tees para cada hoyo. El hoyo insignia de esta cancha es un par 3 de más de 200 yardas con un green tipo isla totalmente rodeado por un gigantesco búnker que va desde el tee, hasta rodear el green.
